Beach or mountains? Which do you prefer? Why?
Choosing between the beach or the mountains feels almost impossible for me because I do not live anywhere close to either. Here in North Texas I am about eight hours away from both, so neither one is part of my everyday life. Maybe that is why they both feel special in their own way.
I have spent more time at beaches than I have in the mountains. There is something healing about the sound of waves crashing. It is one of my favorite sounds and it also happens to be the babies favorite white noise. I cannot wait to take them to the ocean one day and see if they recognize that familiar rhythm in real life. I imagine them hearing the waves and looking around as if something clicks.
But the mountains have their own magic too. I have so many good memories tied to snowboarding and the beauty of being surrounded by snow. There is also fear mixed into that love. Tree wells are something many people do not know about and they terrify me. My family lost a good friend to one while snowboarding and it changed the way I look at mountain trips forever.
Beaches come with their own dangers too. Depending on where you are there can be jellyfish, sharp rocks, and strong currents that remind you to never underestimate nature. Both landscapes demand respect but both offer some of the most beautiful moments this world has to offer when you approach them safely.
I look forward to the day I can show my kids both. I want them to experience the awe of mountains and the calm of the ocean. I want to see which they naturally gravitate toward and someday I will ask them the exact same question. As for me I cannot choose just one. My heart sits somewhere right in the middle, grateful for both.
