Testing for a Milk Protein Allergy in My CHD Baby

We have been holding off on starting solids with our twins because we are in the middle of testing for a possible milk protein allergy in our CHD baby. His pediatrician asked us to wait on introducing new foods until we can figure out what has been upsetting his little stomach. It makes sense, but it is still hard to pause when I was so excited for this next milestone.

I had been looking forward to Thanksgiving being one of their first food experiences. I pictured tiny tastes of mashed sweet potatoes and pumpkin purée, both of them side by side in their high chairs. Now that probably will not happen, and even though it is the right call, I cannot help feeling disappointed.

It also feels strange to think about possibly starting solids with one twin while the other has to wait. They did not share the same beginning. Our CHD baby spent two long months in the NICU while his brother was home with us, and it has always felt like they should experience these firsts together. Maybe that is just part of being a twin mom, wanting to keep things equal even when their paths are different.

I think I will hold off on starting solids for his brother too. There is no harm in waiting a little longer, and it feels right to let them experience that moment side by side. After all they have been through apart, I want them to have that excitement together.

Our little heart warrior continues to amaze me. Somehow, he is already holding his own bottles at just five months old. After everything he has been through, from surgery to feeding challenges and constant monitoring, watching him gain strength feels like such a victory. He has dealt with more frustration than any baby should, while his brother’s biggest struggle is usually just not getting the boobie at the exact second he wants it.

It has been a reminder that milestones do not have to happen at the same time or in the same way. Each of them is growing on their own timeline, and that is perfectly okay.

So for now, we wait. Solids can come later, once his body is ready. And when that day finally comes, when they are both sitting there smearing avocado and sweet potato everywhere, it will feel like so much more than just another baby milestone. It will be a celebration of how far they have both come.
