The Truth About Feeding Twins When One Still Needs Extra Help

Feeding my twins has never been a one size fits all experience. Twin A has always breastfed easily. He was never in the NICU and has been exclusively breastfeeding since the day Twin B came home.

Twin B’s journey has been different from the start. After spending two months in the NICU, he learned to breastfeed once he finally came home. But learning to feed from the breast and actually transferring enough milk are two separate steps. He tries so hard, but he still needs extra support to finish his feeds. That is why we have continued triple feeding. I nurse him, then pump, then top him off so I know he is getting enough.

Recently though, things have felt more up and down than ever. Teething has made him fussy and uncomfortable and he has started refusing to nurse during some feeds. It has been a setback that I did not expect and honestly it has been discouraging at times.

At the same time, we just started introducing solids and that has brought a little hope into the mix. Knowing he has another way to get some of the nutrients and calories he needs helps take some pressure off both of us.

Where We Are Right Now

Twin A continues to breastfeed confidently and consistently. His routine feels steady and simple.

Twin B’s routine shifts almost daily. Some feeds he latches well and seems ready to progress. Other feeds he pushes away from the breast, frustrated and uncomfortable from teething. Those moments are hard. They make me feel like we are losing ground even though I know setbacks are normal.

Solids have added a positive change. Even though he is just beginning, it gives him one more way to fill his little belly. It gives me a little breathing room too.

What Helps Me Stay Steady

I treat each twin as their own story.

Twin A’s smooth journey does not mean Twin B should match it. And Twin B’s challenges do not take away from the beautiful progress he has made.

I acknowledge the setbacks without letting them discourage me.

Teething happens. Refusals happen. Hard stages happen. They do not last forever.

I celebrate all forms of progress.

A slightly better latch, a more relaxed feed, a new solid food he likes. It all counts.

I use the tools that keep us moving forward.

My pump, our bottles, soft silicone feeders, and the first foods we are trying. For anyone who is also triple feeding, a hands free pump and slow flow bottles have been lifesavers. Here are the ones I use and trust so you can see what has worked best for us.

Trusting the Timing

I do not know when triple feeding will officially end for us. Right now our journey is not a straight line and that is okay.

Twin A is thriving on exclusive breastfeeding.

Twin B is navigating teething, learning solids, and slowly working toward more consistent feeds.

We are still moving forward, even if it feels slow. I am choosing to trust the process and trust my babies exactly where they are.

For today, that is enough.
